Last week I could not answer that question. I also could not tell you the difference between a Duroc and Berkshire.
The lesson in Pigs began last summer. August 2025. Owen was invited to attend the fair with a friend who was showing horses and steer. Owen had a great time and asked to have the opportunity to participate in Fair 2026.
The same friends who introduced Owen to fair have graciously offered to allow Owen to raise pigs along side their children at their farm. Owen is so excited.
The time has finally come to get the pigs so the boys can begin their 4-H fair projects. A first for all involved…we attended a pig auction.
I don’t know that I have ever experienced anything quite like it. I jumped a foot when the “ring caller” started shouting to assist the auctioneer. I was shocked at the price of the first two pigs…both selling for more than $2000 each!!! I was incredibly impressed when the auctioneer stopped the auction briefly to encourage parents to let their children bid on their own projects. He advised that he would slow down to confirm with parents before increasing price. So cool for the kids to get to have active role in bidding.
As it turns out Owen selected a Gilt and a Barrow…both Durocs. Thank you Arbuckle Show pigs for the amazing experience and support!
